New City, New Dentist: What to Look For in a Dental Provider

When you move, it can seem like there is an endless list of to-dos when settling in your new city. One important task is to find a new dentist. When looking for an oral healthcare provider, you need to evaluate your needs and do a little bit of research to find the right dental practice for you. Here are a few tips to make this process a little easier.

Define Your Needs

Before you embark on finding a dentist, you need to define what you want and need from your dental provider. Do you have children? If so, you might want to consider a family dental practice so that your whole family can receive treatment from one convenient location. Perhaps you are in need of dental work and are unhappy with the appearance of your smile. If that is the case, look for a practice that offers restorative and cosmetic services.

Do an Online Search

Since the Internet is essentially the new Yellow Pages, perform a simple search in your favorite browser for dental practices in your city. Be sure to use your location as part of your keywords. If you want specific services, you can add those as well. For instance, you can type in “family dentistry” followed by your location to narrow down your results. Visit dental practice websites and write down phone numbers to offices you think might be good for you.

Call Practices in Your Area

Once you have a list of practices that might work for you, give them a call and ask questions. Take note if the office staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Since visiting a dental practice is ongoing, you will want to feel comfortable and welcome with the office’s staff. When calling, you will also want to check and see if the practice takes your dental insurance.

When you have made your decision, schedule a checkup. If the practice you choose doesn’t meet your needs, you can always find another one try in the future.
