Why General Dentistry is Important

Patients of all ages – including children – should receive dental checkups and cleanings at least twice per year. Keeping routinely scheduled appointments is crucial for detecting common oral health conditions and potential issues as soon as possible. As with the other systems of the body, early detection normally means that treatment will be more conservative, effective and budget-friendly. During oral examinations, our dentists will look for signs of disease that might affect the teeth, gums and jawbones. From screening patients for oral cancer to looking for potential gum disease or tooth decay, checkups are incredibly thorough.

General Dentistry FAQs

What can a general dentist do?

A general dentist provides quality care for your most common dental care concerns, including dental check-up exams, cleaning, whitening, fillings, bridges, veneers, crowns, wisdom teeth removal, and root canals. General dentists can work with any patient of any age, and although a given practitioner’s area of expertise or specialty will be determined by their training, all general dentists can provide most primary dental care services.

At Dental Depot, our general dentists offer services in preventive care as well as restorative and cosmetic dentistry. We also offer emergency dental care at many of our locations.

Is there anything a general dentist cannot do?

There are times when a general dentist might recommend a specialist for a given procedure, such as in the case of a complex situation that might be outside their area of expertise. Your dentist will take into account their training, your health, and your unique dental situation to make the most appropriate recommendation. Should you need to see a specialist, the dentist will recommend a provider who can help address your concerns and provide insights on how it might be best to proceed.

Dental Depot has many specialists on staff, which means you can enjoy continuity of care for all your needs at one convenient location.

Can a general dentist extract my tooth?

Tooth extraction is one of the most common dental procedures performed by a general dentist and may be recommended for a variety of reasons, primarily to improve oral health and remove infection and decay. Wisdom teeth are the teeth removed most often.

Most general dentists are qualified to perform both simple and surgical tooth extractions, but there may be circumstances where you are referred to an oral surgeon or other specialist for a surgical extraction.

If you need to have a tooth extracted, the general dentists at Dental Depot can do so right here in our office. They can also provide the restorative dentistry services you need to replace a tooth, as well, including crowns, bridges, and dental implants. We will ensure you are comfortable before, during, and after the procedure and will provide you with the necessary follow-up and routine care to help keep your mouth clean and healthy for years to come.

Can a general dentist perform oral surgery?

Many general dentists can perform certain types of oral surgery. The most common types of oral surgery performed by general dentists are root canals and wisdom teeth removal. Depending on their training or area of specialty, some general dentists can also perform dental implants.

A general dentist can evaluate your unique situation and determine not only if you need oral surgery, but what kind and if it requires a specialist or oral surgeon. If the dentist will be performing your oral surgery, he or she will ensure you are comfortable with and during the procedure and will provide you with all the necessary follow up care and instructions. If your dentist determines that a specialist would be better suited to perform the surgery, they will provide you with a recommendation to ensure your dental care needs are taken care of.

How do I choose a general dentist?

When choosing a general dentist, it’s important to evaluate the provider’s certifications and training. The most important credential to confirm is that the dentist is board certified, which means the individual has obtained their license from the American Dental Association. Additional certifications and your own particular oral needs are important to consider as well. For example, families might want to choose a dentist who is comfortable treating children, so everyone can see the same person, or an older adult may choose a dentist who sees a lot of senior patients.

At Dental Depot, all of our dentists are certified by the American Dental Association and our licensed practitioners can work with all members of your family. We have been a family-owned and operated private dental practice since 1978, and exceptional care at an affordable price has always been our touchstone. If you are looking for a general dentist to meet your dental needs, you can simply call the location most convenient for you and we will schedule you an appointment with one of our experienced providers, many of whom also have additional specialties across an array of cosmetic, preventative, and restorative procedures.

Should I go to a general dentist?

Similar to having a primary care physician, a general dentist can provide important preventative treatment and address many problems or dental health concerns as they arise. Establishing a relationship with a general dentist allows you consistency of care while also giving you access to emergency, restorative, and cosmetic services when you need them from the same familiar provider.

The general dentists at Dental Depot Oklahoma can see everyone in your family–any age, any stage of life–and all at the same time, making it fast, easy, and convenient for you to get the quality, affordable dental care you deserve.
