How Dental Sealants Work
Sealants are a method for protecting the biting surfaces of teeth, which are prone to wear and tear and bacterial colonization. When bacteria colonize, they release acid and if the underlying structures of teeth are exposed due to damaged tooth enamel, bacteria literally eat through the tooth forming a depression or cavity.
A sealant is a clear plastic compound that fills in the pits and grooves of the top surface of teeth. Our children’s dentist will apply the sealant in liquid form almost in paint-like motions and then harden the sealant with a curing light. Sealants are very thin and practically undetectable to others. When placing a sealant, the structure of a tooth is not altered permanently in any way.
Why Sealants are Beneficial
Dental sealants are most beneficial when placed on the molars of teeth. Since molars are located at the back of the mouth, they are usually difficult for children to keep clean when brushing and flossing. The structure of molars also makes them prone to decay. This is because the biting surfaces of molars have fissures and grooves where bacteria and leftover food tend to collect. Once a sealant is applied, bacteria can no longer attack the surfaces of teeth and weaken enamel.
