Over the last 40 years, what began as a small private practice in a converted Oklahoma City duplex has flourished. Today, Dr. Glenn Ashmore, the original Dental Depot dentist and company founder, is joined by more than 40 dentists to meet the dental needs of families like yours.
While our focus is on providing affordable, quality dentistry, we also are committed to giving back to the communities we serve.
We’re celebrating our 40th anniversary this year and that means even more opportunities to make a difference in your life. In 2018 we’re looking forward to bringing you new locations, new trains, and new communities to serve.
When Dr. Glenn started out in 1978 after serving in the Navy, a small private practice was perfect for him and his growing family. A lifelong resident of the area, he established his practice at the corner of N.W. 23rd St. and N. Drexel Blvd., in the historic Linwood neighborhood. But it was Dr. Glenn’s wife, Arlene, who suggested incorporating train memorabilia and antiques into the original decor.
For 25 years, the private practice became part of the neighborhood and worked well for Dr. Glenn and his family.
“Life was a lot simpler back then,” Dr. Glenn said. “It was easier to have a traditional family and business; you could just adjust your schedule for family activities.”
Then, with both of his children out of the house and away at college, Dr. Glenn found himself with too much time on his hands, so he decided to expand.
“He had major empty nest syndrome!” his daughter, Dr. Cody Dunnington, recalled.
Then in February 2001, with construction of the South OKC office underway, a fire destroyed the original office. After firefighters extinguished the blaze, managing to salvage most of the dental charts and records, Dr. Glenn and his team spent weeks in a warehouse sorting through the water-logged remains. But they weren’t alone. The community rallied together, too, offering support and help with the clean-up efforts.
“We’ve had lots of good neighbors to come out of the woodwork and help us,” Dr. Glenn said in an interview one month after the fire. “Northwest Baptist Church (the office’s neighbor to the east) has been very supportive, the dental community has really stepped up to help and make use of their facilities, and of course the police and fire people that night were a tremendous help.”
With lots of helping hands, the opening of the South OKC office was able to open two weeks ahead of schedule in March 2001. With a new practice to work out of, it was time to address the rubble left by the fire.
“We’ll just bulldoze it and start over with a real train station,” Dr. Glenn said.
The iconic Dental Depot stations you know today are the result. From the replica clock towers and signal arms to the water towers and scaled-down trains, we make every part of our Depots from scratch in our Oklahoma City workshop. So no matter where you go, you won’t find another dentist office that looks quite like a Dental Depot!
On Track for Tomorrow
Over the years, Dr. Glenn’s idea to expand has continued and the company – still family owned and operated – now has 19 offices serving four metro areas across three states, with even more offices slated to open in 2018. And like the community that supported Dr. Glenn and the Dental Depot family after the fire, the company and its more than 500 team members are committed to giving back to the communities that continue to help us thrive. As part of that mission, our teams participate in community events and parades, as well as support a variety of nonprofit organizations and local youth activities.
Last year, our teams added Red Nose Day to their giving line-up, and came together to raise some $10,000 to help end child poverty in our own communities and around the world—a donation we hope to outdo this year!
Since 2013, we’ve hosted Dentistry From The Heart, a free dental clinic for the adults in our communities who wouldn’t otherwise have access to the dental care they need. On a Sunday afternoon, team members come together to serve those in need by providing free cleanings, fillings and extractions. Dentistry From The Heart has been such a success, that in 2017 we hosted it at both our Midwest City and Tulsa offices and look forward to serving even more people this year.Of course, we don’t stop there! Did you know that Dental Depot’s clown conductor, Smiley O’Riley, visits schools and daycare centers and uses humor and magic to teach area children about good oral habits? While he’s there, he even gives out goodie bags with all the tools kids need to take care of their teeth! Smiley’s FREE, 30-minute presentations can be booked using our Smiley request form.
As we enter our 40th anniversary year, we want to thank you for coming along for the ride – then, now and for years to come. We’ve got so much planned to celebrate—it’s a party, after all! We’ll be celebrating our patients as well as our employees throughout the year as we approach our big birthday bash in July!
