Dental Depot is a locally owned and operated family company. As such, we believe that the incredible group of doctors, hygienists, assistants and staff that make up Dental Depot are more than their job titles; they’re members of our extended family. In our family, we like to recognize when someone goes above and beyond, living the Dental Depot values. This November we are proud to shine a spotlight on Employee of the Month Gemma Torres.
November 2016 Dental Depot Employee of the Month: Former Athlete Gives New Meaning to Being a Team Player as Dental Assistant
A former soccer athlete, Gemma Torres’ eyes lit up as she talked about the sport. Due to an ankle injury that occurred about five years ago, “I had to hang the cleats up. I’m getting old and don’t want to break something I can’t fix,” she joked.
These days, Gemma dons scrubs instead of shin guards. And, no stranger to being part of a team, this dental assistant and Jill-of-all-trades can – and does – just about anything asked of her. Throughout her nearly six years with Dental Depot, her office manager has continued to challenge her to learn a variety of different positions around the office which includes the front desk, treatment coordinator, hygienist skills, and more.
“I have done almost every job in the building,” Gemma said. Particularly, “I hate the phone ringing, so I’m always helping answer the phone.”
Still, Gemma said her favorite part of her job is helping patients. “… Making sure they feel comfortable and … bringing them back [to the operatory] in a timely manner, because I know people don’t like waiting,” she said.
“Even if they’re not my patient,” she went on. “If there is an open room, I’ll open it up for them.”
“I’d like to make more of me – so I can really help everybody,” Gemma laughed.
“When I was a kid I wanted to be a nurse, but it didn’t happen,” she said. Instead, “I had a kid.” Gemma now has three children, ages 18, 12, and 9, making up what she called, “a fun, interesting house.”
“I’m like, the struggle is so real!” she said, raising her hands, when asked how she balances her career and life outside of work. “I just chill. I’m always here [Dental Depot] and willing to do whatever and help.”
But, “They [Dental Depot] always work with you if you need to take off, have a family event, or something you need to take care of,” she said.
Still, “I always end up volunteering [to work] Saturdays,” she laughed.
On the rare occasions when Gemma keeps a Saturday to herself, she said, “I always have to get up and cook breakfast [for my kids], and I’m like can’t you just eat cereal? I just want to relax!” Nonetheless, she enjoys spending those days with her family, going to the movies and finding other activities to do, she explained. Often, those activities include – you guessed it! – kicking around the soccer ball, or watching basketball.
Gemma was nominated for Dental Depot Employee of the Month by her office manager, Chris Cornell, and a host of teammates for being a team player with a great attitude, someone who always helps out.
