Camila Avalos got her start in dentistry at the age of 18 and has been an orthodontic assistant with Dental Depot for the past decade.
Camila said she wanted to be a ‘baby doctor’ when she was young.
“I just thought it would be a good thing, and I love babies!” she said.
Camila, who speaks Spanish, instead signed on with her dentist, who happened to be looking for a Spanish speaking assistant. She fell in love with the dental field and has been happily building her career ever since, but never at the expense of building her family.
Camila and her husband, whose families come from the same town in Mexico, met through friends in Oklahoma City 14 years ago.
“Out of all people and all the places I’ve been in the world, how did I meet this man whose family is from the same place as mine?” Camila said of how weird it was that they came together the way they did.
As they started their family, Camila stayed home with the children while her husband worked in the oil and gas industry.
“I had been a stay at home mom for years and I was ready to leave a little bit and get my own freedom,” Camila said.
Then, after moving to Oklahoma about ten years ago, Camila got her chance to regain her independence while she and her husband took turns, one watching the kids while the other worked.
“Sometimes I don’t know how we do it, but we manage and we get through,” Camila said.
At one point, her husband’s work schedule was reduced due to industry downturn. During those two years, he stayed home with the kids while she had the opportunity to serve more patients. By the time things picked back up and her husband was able to return to working full time, she said he had gained a new perspective on what she went through as a stay-at-home mom during those early years of their family.
Now, Camila says that her husband is a big part of balancing her career and family.
Still, it’s her fun, childlike personality that helps her relate to both her kids and her younger patients.
“[Camila] always has a smile and is engaged in conversation with the patient(s) and their family,” said Dr. Mark McCollough, Dental Depot orthodontist. “She will go out of her way to make sure they are comfortable and answer any questions they may have. She is always ready to go the extra mile with patient care!”
Camila said she enjoys getting to know her patients, and seeing their results when they finish their orthodontic treatment.
“What really gets me is our autistic patients,” Camila said. “When they come in, at first they hang their head. But when they start seeing the results they are so happy, and then when they’re all done they are just grinnin’ away!”
I’ve just grown as a person in general, I’ve matured a lot here,” Camila said. “I just want to give a shout out to Dr. Cody and Dr. Glenn for giving me the opportunity to be here, and to Mona for teaching me.”
“I’ve just been here for so long,” Camila said. “It’s my home away from home. Even when I’m on vacation, I’m like, ‘can I go back to work, already?’”
When Camila isn’t working, she enjoys playing with her kids – going to the park, watching movies and ‘horsing around’. She also enjoys her family vacations, especially ones where she is able to go to the beach and swim in the ocean. She’s particularly a fan of Florida’s beaches. She said, she and her family are lucky enough to take vacations twice a year, where they just load up their Tahoe and go!
“I just like to have fun!” Camila said. “I’m a big kid!”

Dental Depot is a locally owned and operated family company. As such, we believe that the incredible group of doctors, hygienists, assistants and staff that make up Dental Depot are more than their job titles; they’re members of our extended family. In our family, we like to recognize when someone goes above and beyond, living the Dental Depot values. This July, we are proud to shine a spotlight on Employee of the Month Camila Avalos.
