Dental Depot is a locally owned and operated family company. As such, we believe that the incredible group of doctors, hygienists, assistants and staff that make up Dental Depot are more than their job titles; they’re members of our extended family. In our family, we like to recognize when someone goes above and beyond, living the Dental Depot values. This December we are proud to shine a spotlight on Employee of the Month Ta’Selia Mace.
December 2016 Dental Depot Employee of the Month: Mamma T’s Nurturing Spirit is Just What the Dentist Ordered.
Ta’Selia Mace – known to her friends and co-workers as “T” or “Mamma T” – always knew she was a natural nurturer. As a child, “I always played nurse and played with dolls … I just wanted to care for people. I didn’t want to be a doctor. That wasn’t my thing. I just knew I wanted to care for people,” she explained.
Ta’Selia’s early understanding of her caring nature and her devotion to family led her to Langston University where she pursued a degree in physical therapy and minored in healthcare administration. “My father got sick and I was doing physical therapy to help him. He had multiple sclerosis,” Ta’Selia explained. “But when he passed away, I lost that desire and went with healthcare administration and I’m glad I did it.”
After making the choice to change her major, Ta’Selia’s path was drastically and happily changed.
Ta’Selia said that one of the most interesting jobs she has ever held was an internship with Logan County Hospital. “I assisted with systems, creating better systems for the patients or the employees and how to improve overall office and patient flow,” she explained. “We did surveys and a variety of projects and that was very interesting to me.” And so it seemed, Ta’Selia had found her calling – that is until she discovered youth mentoring.
“I worked with troubled teens, age 7 up to 18,” Ta’Selia recalled. “If they had troubled homes I would talk to them and help get them on the right track – kind of like a big sister. I really enjoyed that.”
Now, Ta’Selia continues to help children and families, as a treatment coordinator at Dental Depot’s Northwest Oklahoma City office. “I like to interact with the patients, especially new patients,” Ta’Selia said. “I get to meet and help a variety of new people.”
“Working for Dental Depot puts you in more of a family feel. It gives you that family feeling, like this is your second home,” she continued.
Still, Ta’Selia tries to keep her work home and her family home as separate as possible. “When I go home, I try to just focus on family. I’m married – going on 20 years – and I have two young men, 23 and 19,” she said proudly. “My 19 year old is going to OU for petroleum engineering and my oldest is a banquet lead at the Renaissance. I have a grandson who is one, and a granddaughter who is three. [My grandson] is a little firecracker!”
In addition to focusing on her family and her career, Ta’Selia said she tries be mindful to put herself first once in a while and she enjoys self-improvement rituals such as taking the time to read, journal, and paint. “I journal … I find that it helps me out when I write things down,” she said. “And I love painting – abstract on canvas – it’s just kind of whatever I feel like.”
Part of putting herself first is doing things that matter most to her. “Now I have an empty nest … I’d really like to get back into mentoring,” Ta’Selia said. “The system is so jacked … they’re broken children and you’re trying to assist with fixing them, but you put them back into a broken home. [We] need to fix the home.”
It’s this ongoing drive to help others that we love most about Ta’Selia, and we couldn’t be more proud to call her part of our team.
Ta’Selia was nominated for Dental Depot Employee of the Month by her co-worker, Edith Sanroman for being “Momma T,” who always looks out for everyone on the team and is willing to help anyone with anything.
“Ta’Selia has such a positive energy in our office. I am grateful to work with her every day. She goes above to help every patient as well as her co-workers. Her commitment to doing her job right and with a smile on her face is why she is so outstanding and such a pleasure to work with.” – Karri Sherman.
